In supporting in the role of managing “Complications of Diabetes Mellitus”, Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City conducted a public talk at Sin Chew yesterday, attracting more than 1000 participants in person and on Facebook Live (https://lnkd.in/gHi5qJmq). Many questions have been asked, and we are glad to address most of them.
Dr Chua Yeok Pin, Consultant Foot & Ankle Orthopaedic Surgeon shared essential strategies for preventing diabetic foot complications, explaining why foot care is crucial, as well as covered other foot complications. We also offered diabetic foot screenings to attendees before the talk.
High blood sugar can damage nerves and blood vessels, especially in the lower limbs. This damage can cause nerve pain or even numbness in the feet, making injuries harder to feel. Reduced blood flow to the feet further slows down healing and increases infection risks, putting individuals with diabetes at a higher risk for infections, ulcers, and, in severe cases, amputations.
Early warning signs to look out for include redness, swelling, blisters, calluses, or cuts that don’t heal. If you notice any of these signs, it’s crucial to see a healthcare provider promptly, even if the pain seems minor. Don't ignore any changes—if something doesn’t look or feel right, get it checked out.
One of the best ways to maintain foot health is by staying informed and connected. Diabetes affects millions worldwide and can lead to severe complications, particularly with our feet, if not carefully managed.
